Sleep Times for Healing Results

The Pineal Gland in the center of the brain is sensitive to light. It produces melatonin and regulates your entire immune system. Many Qigong masters consider the Pineal Gland to be the “Master of the Entire Body”. Ancient man lived in harmony with the rise and setting of the sun. Nowadays people stay up later than before because of artificial lighting. As Qigong healing practioners we recommend our students go to bed by 10 p.m. most nights. Studies show that the Pineal Gland secretes Melatonin from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. If we miss this window or sleep for only a portion of the window, we miss this “cellular repair time”.

Contrary to what most people think, you can sleep too much just as easily as you could sleep too little. Your body knows when it needs more sleep and if you are not healthy, you’ll need more sleep to help repair the body. Some people with illnesses feel the need to sleep too much and this is largely due to the psychological feelings associated with being ill. Most people need 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep. For the general person, even with health challenges, it is better to slowly adapt your body to wake up before or at 6 a.m. The sun rises at this time, which is when nature wakes up.

Practice: Just 30 minutes before sunrise, a burst of energy and ozone rises up from the ground. It calls all the birds to start chirping at almost the same instant. Simply being awake at this earlier hour is good for your health. The energy is at its best and you will find that waking up early affords you extra time each morning to take care of yourself, including time for self reflection and meditation, have plenty of fluids to start your day and feed your body wholesome food to break your fast from sleeping. If you are sleeping past 7 a.m. your body is out of balance. Wake up earlier and get some of the early bird Qi.

Avoid the FLU Shot
GET the ALL Natural Flu Remedy.

ZEN Sanctuary offers natures best flu remedy through Gua Sha which has been used for hundreds of years to combat, colds, flus, and other illnesses which depress our immune system. This all natural remedy is best received during the month of OCTOBER and only lasts 30 minutes.

Gua Sha is a technique commonly used in Asia by practitioners of Tradtional Medicine. With gua sha, the skin is pressured in strokes by a round-edged instrument. In Western terms, it extravasates blood and metabolic waste congesting in the surface tissues and muscles, promoting normal circulation and metabolic processes. By resolving fluid and blood stasis, gua sha is valuable in the treatment of pain, acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many chronic diseases.

ZEN Sanctuary has just added Acupunture back to our offering of services.Acupuncture is a highly efficient way of removing energy blockages in the body, stimulating the health of the vital organs, and restoring needed energy and vitality. Acupuncture is great for relaxation and for treating: pain, stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, obesity, acid reflux, muscle strains, colds, flus, PMS, menstrual irregularities, menopause, geriatrics and pediatrics to name a few.

Mukunda N. Singh is a Licensed Acupuncturist and graduated with a Master's of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. After learning the Usui system of Reiki, he continued to study other forms of natural medicine and to broaden his knowledge of the body's natural ability to heal itself. He takes a holistic approach to healing, bringing balance to the whole person and activating their own ability to heal themselves. While attending PCOM he specialized in Japanese acupuncture and interned at the San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care Inpatient Facility. He also completed a study-abroad program in China at the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a focus on diabetes and respiratory disorders.

Mukunda's services range from Japanese acupuncture, Chinese herbal consultations and moxibustion to reiki energy healing. Japanese acupuncture is a relaxing way to remove energy blockages in the body, stimulate the health of the vital organs, and regain potential energy and vitality. Complementary to Japanese acupuncture, Chinese herbal consultations include an in depth medical history and prescription of natural Chinese herbs and medicinals. In addition to these healing modalities moxibustion may also be used to warm and activate acupuncture points. Lastly, reiki is a form of hands-on energy healing that allows the recipient to enter a deep state of relaxation and natural healing.

ZEN Retreat at Questhaven - More Than Inspiration

by Chance Billmeyer

If your looking for more than a vacation, a true way to relax, be inspired and center yourself, there is nothing better than a RETREAT. There are many wonderful areas in and around San Diego to go for a few days to get some R & R and much needed refueling.

The three centers I have gone to are: Questhaven Retreat Center, Manzanita Village and Deer Park Monastery. Each of these allow a single person or small group to come and experience either a solitary unguided retreat or take advantage of their retreat schedule and join another group.

You don't have to be a Buddhist or Christian to go to either of these locations, although if you are inspired by Buddha or Christ each will have it's special appeal to you.

We just returned from Questhaven. This non-denominational Christian retreat is nestled among chaparral-covered hills in San Diego County. These holy grounds encompass 640 acres of coastal wilderness traversed by several miles of nature trails offering views of the Pacific Ocean, shaded oak sanctuaries, wayside shrines, seasonal wild flowers and a variety of birds and wildlife. We stayed in the Casa Contenta - a wonderful three bedroom retreat house with kitchen and living room, and two full baths. Since we were just up for the day, we did not utilize the bedrooms but did use the Kitchen for our two meals that we prepared and shared.

The topic of this retreat was the SOUL - Some One You Love - and we discussed the many ways we are faced with our LIFE Purpose when dealing with death, our daily work, and relationships. This one day workshop covered information from Dr. Wayne Dwyer's - Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life , Eckhart Tolle's book - A New Earth - Chapter 9, and Dr. Melvin Morse's research on near death experiences.

ZEN Sanctuary will be offering a reatreat in the Fall of 2010 for those interested in learning about your: Life Contract, Sacred Geometry, Food as Medicine, Sitting and Walking Meditation. Check out our website at www.zensanctuary.com and view our calendar to see the exact date and time of the retreat.

Peace.

Diabetics do not eat healthy: Journal of the American Dietetic Association

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Most Americans with diabetes are eating too much fat and sodium, and not enough fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat dairy, a new study suggests.

The results, say researchers, indicate that many people with diabetes may need more education about the importance of nutrition in managing their condition.

Excess weight is one of the major risk factors for type 2 diabetes, a disorder in which the body can no longer properly use the blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Diet, exercise and weight loss are key to managing the disorder, and in some cases, weight loss can reverse the condition.

Yet in the new study, researchers found that of nearly 2,800 middle- aged and older U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes, nearly all were exceeding the daily recommended fat intake. When it came to artery-clogging saturated fat, 85 percent were consuming too much.

ZEN Sanctuary, in San Diego, offers an excellent course in Food Nutrition that is great for Diabetics and Pre-Diabetics. Check out their website at www.zensanctuary.com for their class schedule. The next Food Class is Wednesday, September 30 at 7 p.m.

Physical Activity Helps the Very Old: New Longitudinal Study

No matter how old you are, increased physical activity is associated with decreased mortality and improved function, a longitudinal Israeli study found.

Among physically active participants, eight-year mortality at age 70 was 15.2%, compared with 27.2% among those who were sedentary (P<0.001), according to Jochanan Stessman, MD, and colleagues at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem.

At age 78, eight-year mortality was 26.1% among active participants, compared with 40.8% among the sedentary (P<0.001), and at age 85, three-year mortality was 6.8% among the active compared with 24.4% of the sedentary (P<0.001), the researchers reported in the Sept. 14 Archives of Internal Medicine.

While the effects of physical activity on survival have been explored for middle-age populations, the authors noted that little was known about the long-term health or survival effects of activity among the elderly.

The Jerusalem Longitudinal Cohort Study followed 1,861 people born in 1920 and 1921 for 18 years (17,109 person-years) to determine whether physical activity was associated with improved survival and other functional or health benefits.
